It was just 170 years ago today, August 12, 1851, when Isaac Singer, the man who built an empire from American sewing, received his first patent – number 8294. Now, Isaac Singer did not build the first sewing machine, but he did bring into everyone’s home an easy, cost-effective model.
So began the multi-national Singer Sewing Machine Company. By cutting the price in half of home sewing machines, Singer was able to market everywhere, and expanded his profits considerably. The Turtle Back, using interchangeable parts, was mass produced and inexpensive, yet was a well-built sewing machine. In the end, Singer died a millionaire, and with 20 kids and four wives, all at the same time, that money was needed. 170 years ago today, homelife was revolutionized with just a simple sewing machine.
