Syracuse, N.Y. -- The slumbering lake effect snow machine will awaken today for the first time this season, bringing snow to Upstate New York, especially Tug Hill.
More than a foot of snow could fall on the upper reaches of Tug Hill as strong winds race across Lake Ontario. Up to 6 inches are possible in the Mohawk Valley, and in the far southwest corner of the state, where Lake Erie will provide the moisture for snow.
Major Upstate cities aren’t likely to get much snow: an inch or so in Buffalo and Rochester, and maybe 3 inches in Syracuse. There could be more in the hilltops, where temperatures will fall faster and rain will turn to snow earlier.
Winds up to 40 mph will blow around what snow does fall, making roads slippery and sharply reducing visibility. Like the snow, the winds are expected to be strongest across the hills.
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for much of Western and Central New York, Tug Hill and the Adirondacks.
In Central New York, a winter weather advisory is in effect tonight through 10 a.m. Monday. The region could see 2 to 5 inches of snow and winds up to 40 mph.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the advisory said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.”
Those high winds coming off Lake Ontario could also cause flooding and shoreline erosion in Oswego, Jefferson and northern Cayuga counties, the weather service said.
Rain is likely today, but as a cold front slides through tonight and temperatures fall, that will change over to snow Monday morning. Snow could keep falling on Tug Hill through Tuesday morning.
This patch of winter weather won’t last long. High temperatures are expected to climb into the high 50s on Wednesday and into the mid-60s late in the week and next weekend, with lots of sun.
