KENILWORTH, NJ – An art contest was held this past summer for Harding Elementary students to help decorate a new vending machine that will be used to redeem books with gold coins handed out by the teachers.
First-grade teacher Leslie Bedford coordinated the project, and the PTO sponsored it. The idea for the vending machine came about from Kenilworth Superintendent Kyle Arlington who read an article about a school that had one. He forwarded the article to Mrs. Bedford and she reached out to the Harding School PTO who she says has been very kind and generous to her ideas in the past.
Harding students were encouraged to submit original artwork that was related to Harding or reading for consideration. The winners have been announced and the big unveiling of the new vending machine will be tonight, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the Harding cafeteria. "Books, art, and the students from Harding are perfect together.” Mrs. Beford beamed. “This can be seen in our new Book Machine!”
Due to COVID restrictions, only the nine students that have artwork on the machine and the three that were in the promotional video are invited with one parent each to accompany them. The students who participated as actors in the video were second-graders Devin Singleton, Carly and Adriana Rivera, and first-grader Olivia Rivera.

Adriana Rivera - Second Grade
Troy Kessler - Third Grade
Alessia Iacovo - Fifth Grade
Giulianna Bonacchi - Sixth Grade
Alex Rivera - Sixth Grade
Anjali Shah - Sixth Grade
