Throughout its 34-year history, AMC was renowned as the underdog, often punching above its weight and targeting the Detroit Three: Chrysler, Ford, and GM. That attitude was captured perfectly by the aptly named Rebel, and even more so with the fire-breathing Machine version.

The history of the Rebel dates back to the late '50s, with the name attached to a four-door Rambler that released in 1957. The car was no slouch, either, with 255 bhp allowing drivers to go from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds.

The Rebel disappeared between 1961 and '65, only to return in '66 and shed the Rambler associations from its name. The car was popular, too, having went on to be America’s favorite economy car at the time. It was replaced by the Matador in 1971, but not before things got exciting. Really exciting.

AMC decided to go all out for its final year, adding 'Machine' to the name and beefing up the rest to match. The result was a true muscle car that stood toe-to-toe with the best the Detroit Three had to offer.

Here's how much a classic AMC Rebel Machine is worth today.

What The Car Cost New And What You Got For Your Money

The AMC Rebel Machine first debuted in 1970 with an initial run of 1,000 cars, with a further 1,3o0 coming shortly after. The first 1,000 were colored in the iconic red, white, and blue palette, leaving little to the imagination as to who its creators were. Later models came in solid colors without the stripes and featured black painted hoods. All were reasonably priced, too, especially when you took into consideration just how much power you got for your money. They cost $3,475 new, which was only marginally more than a base-spec Pontiac GTO. Impressive, especially when you factor in that the Machine came with a 390 cubic inch V8 making 340 hp and a whopping 430 lb-ft of torque.

The engine was the same found in another one of AMC's forgotten muscle cars, the AMX. There were tweaks, however, with an improved intake system and exhaust manifolds as well as dogleg port heads. AMC also fitted the Machine with a scoop on the hood, which, along with adding to the aggressive look, came with a valve that helped regulate engine temperature. The car came standard with a Hurst shifter, four-speed manual, while also coming with an option of rear axle ratios of 3.54:1 and 3.91:1 — or, if you were feeling really brave, 5.0:1. The result was 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14.4 seconds, figures that would leave most competitors red-faced at the dragstrip.

What The Car is Worth Today

Given that the Machine was only released for a single year and production numbers were relatively low, the car is now pretty rare. This makes finding one for sale difficult, and even harder finding a good one for cheap.

Expect to pay in the region of $50,000 for an example that's been looked after, with figures showing some selling for as much as $80,000. For many, however, this will be justified, considering just how important the Rebel Machine is in American muscle car history.
