SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. — A man was severely injured Monday after his arm became stuck in a piece of machinery at a Connecticut pasta-making plant.
The industrial accident occurred at Carla’s Pasta in South Windsor shortly before 3:30 a.m., the Hartford Courant reported.
The employee’s arm was stuck in the heavy-duty machine up to the elbow, the newspaper reported. It took firefighters nearly three hours to free him from the machine.
“We found a male party with his arm stuck down the machine,” Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Papp told reporters. “It had rotated around, kind of like a spinner device inside the machine that’s used to make pasta.
“The problem was it was a food-grade stainless steel, so it’s very difficult to cut, so we used every cutting device that we had on our rescue.”
Carla’s Pasta is a family-owned business and makes filled, frozen pastas, WTNH reported.
The extent of the worker’s injuries were called “severe,” according to WFSB.
The man was taken to a Hartford hospital for treatment, South Windsor police officer Sgt. Mark Cleverdon told the Courant.
“It was extremely complex. It wasn’t as simple as, ‘OK, let’s shut the machine off.’ It was more intricate,” Cleverdon told the newspaper. “They were trying to focus on getting him out without doing any more damage.”
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident, WTNH reported.
