A man who had been living in East Hartford and used his Hartford auto-repair business to launder drug proceeds was sentenced to almost five years in prison for trafficking acetylfentanyl, a “fentanyl analogue,” according to federal authorities.

William Valerio-Palermo, also known as “Willy,” 37, a citizen of the Dominican Republic last residing in East Hartford, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford to a total of 70 months in prison, according to federal authorities.

Authorities, citing court documents and statements made in court, said law enforcement learned in 2018 that Valerio was “trafficking kilogram-quantities of fentanyl and was using his Hartford auto-repair business to launder drug proceeds.”

A court-authorized search in 2018 of a West Hartford apartment Valerio was renting turned up about “six kilograms of acetylfentanyl, items used to process and package narcotics, and approximately $49,000 in cash,” federal authorities said in a statement.

Valerio, who has been in custody since he was arrested in 2018 and he pleaded guilty on July 6, 2021, faces immigration proceedings when he gets out of prison, federal authorities said in the statement.

The investigation was conducted by the DEA Hartford Task Force and the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Gang Task Force, according to federal authorities. The DEA task force includes personnel from the DEA Hartford Resident Office, Connecticut State Police, and Bristol, Hartford, East Hartford, Enfield, Manchester, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, Windsor Locks and Willimantic police departments, federal authorities said.

The FBI task force includes the Hartford, East Hartford, New Britain, and West Hartford police departments, Connecticut State Police and state Department of Correction, federal authorities said.
