BARRY COUNTY, MI— The Gilmore Car Museum will reopen to the public on Friday, June 12 with a new set of safety protocols.
The sprawling property in Hickory Corners, which bills itself as North America’s largest auto museum, has been closed to the public since March 14 due to concerns surrounding COVID-19 and the Michigan “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The museum opened their doors starting on Monday, June 8 to those with memberships and will open to the general public Friday, June 12.
Guests returning when the museum reopens Friday will be greeted by a new Packard automobile exhibit that features a 1901 Packard Model C, one of the first cars with a steering wheel.
In addition to the new exhibit, the museum plans to host over a dozen car shows starting with “Corvette envy” on Sunday July 19. The season’s final event, Congress of Motorcars, will feature gas, steam and electric vehicles that are all pre-1942. The “congress of motorcars” which will take place October 2-3. The museum’s 1941 vintage diner, George and Sally’s Blue Moon Diner, will be open to the public, but guests will not be able to eat inside. Instead, their orders will be delivered to them outside.
The inside portion of the museum will be limited to a capacity of 275 guests.
“When you come to the Gilmore Car Museum you’ll notice that of course all of us are wearing face masks and we do ask all of the visitors to wear them. Additionally you’ll see sanitizing stations set up throughout the museum and when you enter the museum you’ll be greeted with your new road map to the cars. This helps to direct people through and there is new signage throughout the museum too that will show you all the different things there are to see and do and take you around there in a very safe and healthy way," said Ken Fischang, Director of Programming and Hospitality for Gilmore Car Museum.
Face masks will be required inside all buildings and are highly recommended in outside spaces. The museum will be selling masks and gloves for $1 each in its store. They will also have several hand sanitizer stations throughout the museum. The museum will have a “rigorous cleaning schedule” and employees will wear gloves when handling cash or food. Per state law, guests must maintain six feet of social distancing as well.

ecause we’re 90 acres and have over 20 buildings throughout our beautiful campus. We’re monitoring that when you come in so you can be guaranteed to have a safe and wonderful trip,” Fischang remarked.
After it reopens Friday, the museum plans to operate during their regular hours: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
