Should you be in Philadelphia and suddenly be struck with the urge to crochet with no craft stores in sight, worry not—you can simply pick up a few skeins from the city’s very first yarn vending machine.
Mental Floss reports that Philadelphia local, Emani Outterbridge, came up with the idea when she was mulling over ways to sell her self-made designer yarn to others in her area after an injury caused her to look at managing her business a different way. Outterbridge—who has been crocheting from a young age and who owns and runs her own business in the craft—was able to fundraise enough money to order three of the delightfully pink machines.
The first machine, which was installed outside of the Elements of Grooming barber shop, was so successful that Outterbridge intends to not only install the other two, but order even more machines for additional placements.
The yarn vending machines are stocked with eight different multicolored yarns and can hold up to 560 skeins at a time. According to an Instagram post, Outterbridge encourages visitors to “make a purchase, take pictures, [and] listen to music” as they check out the machine for themselves.
The machine currently accepts only cash but will eventually be able to take payments in cards as well as Apple Pay.
For those who are unable to make it to the Philadelphia area any time soon, Outterbridge sells her own crochet designs and custom items via her online store, “Emani Milan.” The young entrepreneur even offers customers “crochet essentials” should they seek to dabble in the art themselves.
You can visit Outterbridge’s yarn vending machine at 1632 Cecile B More Ave., Philadelphia, Pa.
