GTA 6 Needs To Refocus The Series On Actual Grand Theft Auto - Screen Rant

Fans are still waiting for even the slightest official word on Grand Theft Auto 6, but rumors continue to circulate about the development of the highly anticipated game. These rumors continually indicate that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, but there has been so much conflicting speculation it's hard to discern what's credible. Regardless of the setting and main character for GTA 6, it's time Grand Theft Auto return to its roots and heavily feature the actual crime of grand theft auto.

The series has always dealt with the criminal underworld, with even the first Grand Theft Auto from 1997 having players rise through the ranks of various crime syndicates. As time has passed, though, GTA has bloated to include narratives so intricate that they start above the realm of petty crime. The first few missions when playing as Franklin in GTA 5 have him boosting cars in a corrupt repossession operation for a dealership owner, but the game very quickly moves the player (and Franklin) on to full-fledged heists. This is not to say GTA 5's story is bad - it's quite the opposite - but the government agency conspiracies and espionage are a far cry from where the series started.

The whole game doesn't have to revolve around the one crime of grand theft auto - that would be incredibly boring, but real progress for both Grand Theft Auto 6's main character and the player can be created by fleshing out the systems surrounding relatively minor offenses. The prospect of this is looking up thanks to Rockstar's work creating the heavily interactive Red Dead Redemption 2, and the keen attention it pays to the in-game horses.

Cars Themselves Need a Bigger Role in GTA 6

For the most part, the life cycle of a car in Grand Theft Auto involves carjacking it and then driving it around until it's destroyed or lost. Luxury sports cars can just be taken off the street with little repercussion once the cops are evaded, so players don't have much of an incentive to hold on to any specific vehicle. However, if a little more work had to go into getting and maintaining a nice vehicle in Grand Theft Auto 6, players might be more interested in the series' namesake activity.

What if simply smashing a car window wasn't the only option to get in? GTA 6 could let players pick the lock, search for a hidden spare key, or slide a tool in the window to unlock it. If a player wants to keep a nice luxury car they've found in someone's driveway, they won't want to drive around with a smashed window forever. Police officers recognizing a car reported as stolen could incentivize the player to find a shop that'll swap out license plates. Upgrades could be bought to improve the vehicle's performance and make the time and money invested feel worthwhile. Maybe a player wants to swap in a better engine from another car, so they go steal one, bring it to a chop shop, and have their ride upgraded.

Grand theft auto (the crime) isn't the only gameplay element that would benefit from Grand Theft Auto (the game) fleshing out the details of minor crime. GTA 5 already let players rob a select few convenience stores, but more explorable buildings and options for theft in general would let players sneak into businesses at night, shoplift without confrontation, and more. Rockstar has remained silent on its plans for Grand Theft Auto 6 up until now, but the game studio has a real opportunity to evolve the series by focusing on minor details like grand theft auto.
