CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “It feels good to be home!” Machine Gun Kelly yelled from the draft stage as he finished his opening set. The crowd screamed, excited to watch one of the city’s most well-known performers.

The Cleveland-native performed Saturday evening, putting a bow on the NFL Draft, a three-day event that brought fans from near and far to The Land.

A Shaker Heights graduate, MGK began his career as a hip-hop artist but now records pop-punk. His latest album, “Tickets to My Downfall,” is a full-fledged rock album, with songs like “bloody valentine” and “title track” giving early-2000s punk vibes. His punk music is similar to blink-182′s sound, which makes sense considering blink-182 drummer Travis Barker produced and played drums on “Tickets to My Downfall.”

People in the draft theater, the area around the main draft stage, as well as people in the vaccinated fan zone behind it, danced and jumped up and down. With people wearing masks, the COVID-19 pandemic’s hold on society was still felt. But as the crowd enjoyed the concert, it felt like a slight return to normal.

As he jammed, MGK sported a pink and lime green shirt and wore white pants. He regularly engaged with the crowd, even pointing out a rainbow over the city after a brief rain.

Mid-show, he dedicated a performance to his late father, singing the song “lonely,” from his latest release.

Machine Gun Kelly continued to exude high energy as the concert wound down, saving some of his biggest hits for last. The crowd exploded at the first notes of “bloody valentine,” and so did MGK, lying down on the stage floor as he played its last notes on his guitar.

The final song was as Cleveland as it gets. MGK performed “Till I Die,” a Cleveland anthem and one of his most beloved rap songs.

“Cleveland, you know we had to drop this one,” MGK said before performing the song. “This is the last song of the night, so let’s make it count!”

As he rapped lyrics like “On the East Side till I die,” and “Bumping that Bone-Thugs till I die,” the crowd stirred in a collective rumble, bumping to one of MGK’s biggest hits.

Fans who want to see MGK in concert again won’t have to wait too much longer. In December, he’ll perform at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse as part of his “Tickets to My Downfall” tour.
