OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio -- Starting this school year, good behavior begets golden tokens at Falls-Lenox Primary School where students can select a book of their choice at the brand-new book vending machine, which made its debut last week at the Bagley Road school.

“Across our district, we have the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program -- be safe, be respectful, be responsible and be kind,” Falls-Lenox Primary School Principal Lisa Williams. “Each week teachers nominate a student for what we call the Bulldog Best Award. Normally those students get their names read on the morning announcements and have their pictures taken for the bulletin board in the lobby.

“Now this year they get a gold coin to put in the vending machine to select a book. We love to see our students excited about books and reading. It connects with the love for literacy.”

Superintendent Olmsted Falls City School District Jim Lloyd said the idea for the book vending machine, which was $5,365 and paid for out of district funding, came from another school’s social media post earlier this year.

“Linking the importance of early literacy development through the love of reading and our PBIS system seemed like a natural fit,” Lloyd said. “It was so refreshing to see kids excited to get a book through the vending machine. It will be a great addition to Falls-Lenox.”

The PTA donated $1,000 to stock the book vending machine with Falls-Lenox Primary School planning to use funds from its annual Scholastic Book Fair going forward.

“The cool thing about this is by the end of the school year every child in the building will have received a book from the vending machine,” Williams said.

So far the reaction has been just as planned.

“One little girl was jumping up and down,” Williams. “She was just excited to take their new book home.

“It’s just the anticipation of getting to use the vendor machine, putting the token in, making your book selection and then watching as slowly the book drops down. And once they got the book in their hands they were just ecstatic.”

Among those students excited about the book vending machine were third graders Macie Garver and Tegan Bergfeld.

“It seems like magic,” Garver said. “You put the token in and the book magically appears as your own.”

Added Bergfeld, “I was very excited to get my book. I heard from my classmates it was a good book, so I want to read it.”
