INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Vending machines often call to mind calorie-laden snacks loaded with sugar, salt, fat and barely pronounceable chemicals. But Independence Primary School recently revealed one that is considerably more healthy.

The school’s new book vending machine -- a gift from the Independence Primary School PTO -- rewards students who display positive behavior with titles that are popular among children far and wide.

Kids win books in several ways. Good behavior is recognized with tickets that can be turned in for vending machine tokens. The young readers can also earn a “golden ticket” at school assemblies. Finally, students observed displaying outstanding behavior that embodies I-Pride values may receive a token on the spot as part of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports initiative.

To help reinforce the lessons of the behavioral program, students recite the I-Pride pledge daily. The pledge includes commitments to being positive, respectful and dependable.

Given the kids’ reaction to the new machinery, such attributes will likely not be in short supply in the coming months and years.

“The students were so excited to see the machine when it was finally unveiled, and they could not wait to have the opportunity to use it,” said Principal T.J. Ebert.

The vending machine, still in its shipping box, created quite a buzz among students as it sat in the main lobby during the week prior to the unveiling. Staff wrapped the box in a large ribbon and parents helped load the machine with books when school was not in session.

“We are appreciative of our incredibly supportive parents and school community for providing an opportunity to connect making good choices with early literacy among our youngest learners,” commented Ebert.

Middle school presents musical of global significance

The Independence Middle School Drama Club will perform “All Together Now,” a global event in celebration of local theater, at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 13. The event will take place in the middle school auditorium. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door.

The musical revue includes songs from favorites like “Matilda,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Newsies,” “High School Musical,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Mamma Mia” and others.

Thousands of theatrical groups around the globe will perform the revue, which helps raise funds for the often cash-strapped organizations, on the same weekend.

The Independence show is directed by Gretchen Obrovac, music teacher at the middle and high schools, and includes more than 70 cast and crew members, as well as the production team. Rebecca Justice, an area dance instructor, provided choreography.

The nostalgia-laced revue was created by Music Theatre International.

“Supporting theatrical arts has and always will be a priority for me,” revealed Principal Jamie Vanek. “Our district is fortunate to have such a strong program.”
