Allegheny Health Network is donating medical supplies and a mobile X-ray machine to war-torn Ukraine.

AHN radiation oncologist Dr. Alexander Kirichenko, a native of Kyiv, Ukraine, said he fielded several phone calls and correspondence last weekend from Dr. Sergey Zemskov of the Ukrainian National Medical University, pleading for medical supplies and equipment to help treat injured Ukrainians.

“Our surgery departments and clinics around the city are currently experiencing critical shortages in essential surgical equipment and instruments to provide emergency care — a mobile X-ray machine is most important now,” wrote Zemskov, a cancer surgeon.

Kirichenko described the plea as “urgently needed” and brought the request for help from Zemskov to the attention of AHN administrators.

In response, AHN is donating a 3-year-old Siemens Healthineers mobile X-ray machine valued at about $200,000.

In addition, West Penn Hospital is donating about 80 pallets of medical supplies.

The machine and supplies will be transported this week by Brother’s Brother Foundation to New Jersey. The items then will be flown to Poland. From there, the supplies will be loaded onto a truck for final transport to Kyiv.

“Our hearts go out to all of the people of Ukraine,” said Dr. Vicenta Gaspar Yoo, Allegheny Valley Hospital president. “I’m glad we’re filling a need, and we can help more victims by donating this.”

Brother’s Brother is covering transportation costs, and AHN imaging services regional administrator Carson Kepler said Allegheny Valley Hospital has multiple X-ray units onsite and was able to accommodate the request.

Kepler said hospital X-ray operations at Allegheny Valley Hospital will not be impacted by the donation.

The shipment is expected to arrive in Ukraine by early April, Kepler said.

Kirichenko said he maintains close contact with physicians and other medical staff in Ukraine and has relatives living there.

“I used to live there, and now where a huge beautiful mall once was, it’s bombed,” he said.

Kirichenko said the X-ray unit will be utilized in operating rooms to screen patients and check for shrapnel and other foreign objects caused by blunt force injuries.

“They’re running out of day-to-day surgical supplies,” Kirichenko said. “They (medical personnel) are working 24/7, and the Russians have bombed some of the hospitals.”
