American made, American power, American Dream.
In Grasso’s Garage, we have a soft spot for American-made vehicles. This week’s test is just that, the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe RST. True to its long-lasting history, this dream machine on wheels is really a pleasure to drive, ride in and a beautiful sight for onlookers.
It checks the boxes in most consumers’ checklists while accompanying a tremendous amount of additional features and build options to customize consumer adaptability. Our tester was wrapped in a Cherry Red exterior while the interior came in Jet Black with Victory Red accents.
Three motor options exist on the RST, while our tester came powered by a 6.20-liter Ecotec3 V8 engine, the Tahoe produced 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission was smooth and included a tow/haul option. Although powerful, we really noticed some lack in the fuel mileage category. Similar to pickup truck miles per gallon, we squeezed out a little over 16 miles per gallon on our test, while we had a tough time getting to 14 mpg around town. In today’s market, and fuel prices in the upper $3s, this is a tough bullet to bite in the bank account department.
Six model options are available on the Tahoe while our four-wheel-drive RST tester came with an array of upgrades such as the Sport Performance package and the Luxury package. Just over $6,000 in upgrades got you quite a few extras including Magnetic Ride, dual exhaust tips, memory seats, second-row captains, third-row bench seats, power heated mirrors, and HD surround vision. A $2,000 rear seat media system was all the craze for passengers as they could ultimately rule the rear of the cabin. A suite of Google products such as assistants were also nice additions to the popular Tahoe.
Although pricey, notching up to the $70,000 category, the Tahoe was really nice to drive. In traditional GM fashion, the accoutrements were easy to use and nothing was over elegant. The fuel economy is certainly a factor for the Tahoe as 16 mpgs is not as efficient as the American-made SUV could be. It would be certainly nice to see some improvements in the fuel economy department, but you could always opt for the 3.0 Duramax Turbo Diesel for less money.
