Christmas songs are paramount during this festive season, and with Google’s new app, one can make this Christmas memorable by composing cheerful operatic songs.
Google’s Blob Opera is a new machine learning application created by artist David Li that allows users to compose operatic songs. These songs are sung onscreen by four singing “blobs” that are colorful creatures with Santa hats.
The new application is available on Google’s Arts & Culture, Experiments page. Users can program the singing blobs by merely dragging sliders for each blob for different parts of the score. The machine learning model then puts them together, making a harmonical composition performed by the blobs.
The blobs are trained on operas sung by professionals such as Christian Joel (tenor), Frederick Tong (bass), Joanna Gamble (mezzo‑soprano), and Olivia Doutney (soprano). Each of the four blobs performs one of the four singing voice ranges: tenor, bass, mezzo-soprano, and soprano. They sing opera singers’ style based on training.
Users can experiment with their songs by changing pitch, vowel sounds, and the notes they initially chose when composing music. Users can also sing themselves and share their performances with friends and family. Google’s blobs also perform classic Christmas songs for those who would like to keep their Christmas conventional.
