ESSEXVILLE, MI - Essexville-Hampton Public Schools’ elementary ‘literacy coach’ is leading a fundraiser to purchase a book vending machine for Verellen Elementary School.

At Verellen, staff have been working on engaging students and encouraging their intrinsic motivation to read, said literacy coach Stacy Maze. Maze started a Donors Choose fundraiser to buy a “Bookworm Vending Machine” to reward students and encourage their love of reading after such a difficult year, she said.

“I really just wanted to do something for our students and our staff, they’ve just been working so hard and going above and beyond,” Maze said. “I thought this would be an exciting addition to our building.”

The machine accepts tokens in exchange for books, which Maze hopes can be a better reward to encourage positive behavior than items like stickers or candy. With this “unique” year, Maze said she hopes every student can get a book through the machine in the coming year.

“The plan is, if we can get the machine funded... to fill it with current books, high-interest characters, new books we can get when they first come out,” Maze said. “We just thought it would be another way to get them excited. It really just brings out that conversation about books and helps them to develop that lifelong reading skill.”

The fundraiser will last through March 29 and has about $4,000 remaining of a $5,300 goal as of Monday, Dec. 7. Donations up to $50 will be doubled until Monday, Dec. 14 if donors use the code “LIFTOFF,” Maze said.
