GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The 2021 Michigan International Auto Show and two other conventions planned for DeVos Place have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The auto show was scheduled to take place from Feb. 4-7.
“Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, Show Management has decided to forgo this year and look forward to 2022,” ShowSpan, the event’s promoter, said on its website. “Our primary concern is doing everything we can to protect the health and well-being of the greater community, and to ensure a safe environment for our exhibitors, patrons, and staff.”
In addition to the auto show, the Grand Rapids Camper, Travel and RV Show, originally scheduled for Jan. 21-24, has been canceled. The Grand Rapids Remodeling and New Homes Show, originally scheduled for Jan. 15-17, has also been canceled.
“Although we hate to cancel these shows, it is the right decision given the current circumstances,” Show Producer Mike Wilbraham said in a statement.
ShowSpan presents 14 shows per year.
Show producer Henri Boucher said he expects “the majority will take place as scheduled.”
“We remain hopeful that things will begin to look markedly different moving forward,” he said in a statement. “People are following experts’ guidance, and there is good news regarding vaccines. Combined with the OpenSafely initiative we’ve developed for our shows, and protocols that our venues have in place, I believe most of our events will happen.”
Temporary orders put in place by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration to reign in a surge of coronavirus cases prohibit indoor gatherings of more than 10 people. The latest restrictions took effect Nov. 18 and remain in place until Dec. 8.
