SAUGUS (CBS) — A Saugus man who was trapped by a piece of heavy machinery has died. Saugus Police and the Essex District Attorney’s Office identified him as 57-year-old Mark Bertrand.

A Bobcat machine overturned and trapped Bertrand at his home Friday evening. He was rushed to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital where he later died.

Bertrand was the boys basketball coach at Saugus Middle High School.

“Mark was a true gentleman, as well as a valued member of our school community and the Town of Saugus. Mark was a true family man, and a pillar of the Saugus community, and his passing has and will continue to profoundly impact our school and athletic families. The Bertrand family is widely recognized as the “First Family of Saugus Basketball” and Mark’s presence and influence will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. We also send our deepest sympathies to Mark’s wife, Marybeth and their sons Joseph, Daniel and Michael and his extended family as well,” said a joint statement from SMHS Principal Michael Hashem and Athletic Director Terri Pillsbury.

Police said foul play is not suspected.
