BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One Bowling Green elementary school spent Friday afternoon celebrating a new, fun way for kids to read.

Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School’s kids all gathered around Friday afternoon to watch their new book vending machine’s ribbon cutting.

The book vending machine project was a collaborative effort between the school and the Family Resource Center.

The vending machine only accepts special tokens that teachers can award to the kiddos. The kids named ambassador of the month along with others who earned their tokens got to enjoy the first round of picks hot off the press.

Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School’s library media specialist Terri Cleaver said she began talking about the vending machine with the Family Resource Center last fall, and now after a delay due to COVID, the machine is finally here.

“One of our targets here at Parker-Bennett-Curry is literacy and just making sure that we are promoting reading and enhancing reading with our students,” said Cleaver. “So, we just wanted something visible that they could walk past and see a reward that’s not just candy or a toy, but it’s something that will help them grow. So, this will put books in the hands of students at their homes, and so we just thought this would be a good way to reward our students.”

Cleaver said this is only the first book batch of many, so the kids will have no shortage of reading material.
