Shots erupted in Birmingham Monday afternoon, leaving one person dead.
The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – alerted police to shooting in the 4300 block of Richard Arrington Junior Boulevard about 3:30 p.m.
When officers arrived at the location – Bates Auto Sales – they found a man on the sidewalk between the business and RAJ Boulevard suffering from multiple gunshots wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
An altercation between two males is believed to have led to the deadly shooting. A person of interest still on the scene was detained for questioning.
Mauldin said fatal altercation appeared to be an isolated incident.
Multiple family members of the victim were on Monday afternoon’s scene.
The homicide was one of two reported in just one hour.
About 3 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to 14 Watertown Circle after a body was found in the closet of a vacant apartment there.
It wasn’t immediately how long the victim had been dead, but the discovery was made after someone reportedly asked an off-duty officer for help moving a dead body.
Three people have been detained at that scene.
