A Baltimore woman who’s endured two auto thefts in recent weeks says a case against a pair of teen suspects is no longer moving forward.

“The other day they told me they were no longer able to prosecute the case,” Tanika Gaskins told FOX45 News.

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) confirmed Gaskins car was reported stolen in mid-September and again over the weekend.

According to BPD, two teenage boys were arrested after the first auto theft on September 14.

“Officers arrested a 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old male, after following the vehicle into a parking garage in the 1700 block of North Charles Street,” a BPD spokesperson said.

BPD’s helicopter, Foxtrot, tracked the stolen vehicle, “driving erratically, crossing the yellow lines and failing to stop at the stop signs” according to a police report shared with FOX45 News.

The report says the teenage suspects tried to run from officers before they were arrested.

After the teens were taken into custody, a handgun without a serial number was also recovered from underneath a car in the parking garage, according to the police report.

Gaskins told FOX45 News investigators informed her the car was allegedly involved in other crimes while it was stolen.

“It was in a high-speed chase," she said. "It was involved in a few robberies."

Now she indicates it is unknown if accountability will come for the people responsible for stealing her car the first time.

“They had a case against them and things of that nature -- and they just told me that because they’re juveniles, they couldn’t really charge them,” said Gaskins. “And that’s my problem. Its nothing but juveniles that’s out here just hopping in these Kias and Hyundais and just taking them as if it's their car.”

On Tuesday, FOX45 News asked the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office the following questions about the teenage suspects:

  • How long were these suspects in custody?
  • What charges were these suspects facing?
  • Why were these charges dropped?
“Due to Maryland’s Shielding Law, we are unable to share information about cases prosecuted in the juvenile system,” a spokesperson for the State’s Attorney’s Office said in an email.

“It's like a slap in the face,” she said. “They can commit these crimes, get put on probation for about a few days, and then next thing you know the charges are getting dropped. Or just nobody’s being held accountable.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Gaskins was still waiting for her car to be found after being stolen a second time Sunday night.
