OREM, Utah (AP) — A 17-year-old girl died following an auto-pedestrian crash in Orem on Monday night, authorities stated.
The crash happened shortly before 6:45 p.m., just as the sun was setting, on Oct. 16. Police at the time reported a person had been injured in an auto-pedestrian crash and urged residents to avoid the area as major accident investigators worked at the scene
However, details on the crash weren't released until Tuesday morning.
According to a statement issued by the Orem Police Department, a 17-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle in the area of 400 South and Vineyard Road Monday evening. First responders treated her at the scene.
The girl was then transported to the hospital, where she later died.
"We give our deepest sympathies to all who are affected by this accident," according to the statement.
The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, police reported.
The statement didn't include information on whether the teen was crossing the road or was otherwise in the street at the time of the crash. It also was unknown whether police were investigating if impairment, drowsy driving or distraction played a part in the crash, or there was another factor, such as a visibility issue.
Authorities didn't say whether the driver was being cited.
No information was provided about the driver or the vehicle. Police stated the teen's identity will not be released at this time.
