GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -Since June is the Month of Miracles for the Children’s Miracle Network, we are telling stories about the different programs and children who are alive today because of those programs at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital in Greenville.
Your donation to the Children’s Miracle Network helps jump-start these programs and provide machines that are important in the recovery of some sick children.
Amber Lake took a look at a treatment that uses a pump to get oxygen into the blood known as ECMO. It’s a technique that saved 3-year-old Waylon Denny’s life.
Waylon was put on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO, three-months after he was born. It was just a few days after he had eye surgery.
Dr. Matthew Ledoux is the Pediatric Medical Director for ECMO at James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital, and also one of the doctors on Waylon’s team when he was in the hospital.
“He was one of our premature infants. He had been in the NICU for quite some time and premature infants are pretty fragile and he underwent surgery and that surgery really tipped him over the edge and he got incredibly sick. His lungs started to fail and we needed to put him on ECMO to save his life,” Dr. Ledoux said.
He said ECMO is, “Heart-lung bypass for really really sick children. Sometimes, children have their lungs fail or their heart fail and in order to save their lives we can put them on this machine where they can rest and can get better.”
And in Waylon’s case, it was the last option.
Sara Denny, Waylon’s mom, said her son was on ECMO for ten days.
“It was crazy, I really didn’t know what to think during that time. And then seeing him go from the NICU and not on so many machines, he was in oxygen at the time, to being put on ECMO, it was just a scary time,” Denny said.
Dr. Ledoux said before January 2015, the children’s hospital didn’t have ECMO machines.
Now, Dr. Ledoux said—because of Children’s Miracle Network— the ECMO outcomes at Maynard Children’s Hospital are slightly better than hospitals across the nation.
“All of our equipment to open the program came from money from CMN. Without those donations we wouldn’t have the program, we wouldn’t have the equipment and we know that children have survived because of it,” Dr. Ledoux said.
Donating to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals means you are helping provide programs, equipment and services for sick kids like Waylon, and giving doctors a chance to give these children their lives.
And you can continue to help make miracles happen by making a donation at 877-719-5437. We’ve also got a Month of Miracles special coming up on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. on WITN.
