FENTON, MI — Diners entering The FirePlace Bar and Grille in Fenton see a machine that looks similar to a body scanner you might see at the airport. Step inside and it performs a temperature check, detects if you’re wearing a face mask, dispenses hand sanitizer and activates a full-body sanitation mist.
It’s called the Genatek GT 1000. The green-and-black machine stands nearly 8-feet tall and performs all of the aforementioned functions in 15 seconds, according to President and Founder John Cooper of Genatek Global, LLC.
Fenton-based Genatek Global, in partnership with FirePlace owner Joe Gilbert, unveiled the machine to the public on Tuesday, July 28, at the restaurant, 2238 N. Long Lake Road.
Gilbert’s business is the first to try out the Genatek GT100. He thinks the unit could be a game changer.
“If it makes you feel that much more secure about coming out, possibly going and having a burger, your favorite cocktail or whatever, it may be and you wouldn’t do it before,” Gilbert said. “If this is the thing that puts you over the edge, well then it’s done its job.”
Gilbert purchased the The FirePlace about a year ago, but it’s been around since 1970. Gilbert touts the bar as having excellent food and a great atmosphere. Some of the food featured on the menu includes tacos, pizza and specialty sandwiches.
The owner has a lease agreement with Genatek Global. Gilbert says if one or two more people patronize the business, it’ll pay for the daily fee.
Cooper said there’s a range in price to purchase one of the units, but one with all the features costs $24,000.
What makes it unique is all the features wrapped into one unit, Copper said.
“We have about 16 people in total that have been working and designing and engineering on the product,” Cooper said. “We started in December after our pandemic really came to life as a reality.”
The company manufactures the machine in Fenton, Cooper said, who has a background rooted in manufacturing.
Cooper said the mist disinfectant kills 99 percent of pathogens and is a solution the company developed, which is FDA-approved, he said.
“We really looked at where some of the problems were,” Cooper said. “Hand sanitation - because that’s transfer of germs, not just COVID, all germs, pathogens, common cold, foot and mouth disease at school. These are things that really cause problems in our society.”
So far, diners at the restaurant have given mostly positive reviews of the towering machine, Gilbert said.
“I had some people think it’s the best thing since sliced bread,” Gilbert said.
Going inside the machine is optional to customers, Gilbert stressed. If the thermometer detects a customer has an abnormal temperature or no mask, a red light will flash, Cooper said.
Since Tuesday, five more clients want the machine for their businesses, according to Cooper.
Cooper said the company is in the process of patenting technology to provide units for buses.
“I really feel like (retrofitting) these school buses and other mass transit is really important as well,” Cooper said.
