Orange County auto dealers saw coronavirus-linked economic turmoil slash their sales by 23% in 2002’s first half vs. a year earlier.

The stats from the Orange County Automobile Dealers Association were in line with downbeat national trends. Plus, the numbers confirm the industry’s major positive buzz of this otherwise dispiriting spring: how hot carmaker Tesla is, with its Model 3 being the county’s top seller.

In 2020’s first six months, 67,036 new cars were registered in Orange County, according to data compiled by Experian. These figures, tracking no-fleet “retail” sales for the industry group, show sales had dropped 4% last year from 2018.

Auto sales were hurt by “stay at home” orders seeking to slow the COVID-19 pandemic’s spread. That ensuing lockdowns throttled business activity and slashed employment.

Those same limitations also meant more people were working from home, commuting less and lowering the need for new cars. The recent rebound in virus cases and deaths resulted in a state U-turn on looser business limitations that won’t help the chances for a quick economic rebound.

The association’s report shows traditional sedans taking the largest sales hit, plunging 31% with 26,091 sales. Light trucks — including pickups and SUVs — saw a 16% drop to 40,495. After the Tesla, Orange County’s top-selling models were the Honda Civic and Toyota Rav 4.

“Thankfully, the first half of 2020 is now history,” reads the OCADA report.

The association found some solace in the fact that June’s sales were off just 7% vs. 2019, with trucks up 6% over 12 months. And the countywide, year-over-year drop of 23% was only slightly larger than the nationwide decline of 20%.

Other report highlights:

  • Orange County’s top-selling brand was Toyota, then Honda, Ford and Tesla followed by a tie between Mercedes and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram. For 2019, it was the same top two followed by Mercedes and Ford.
  • The group forecasts total sales for 2020 will run 20% below last year with a 10% rebound predicted for 2021.
  • Only four brands had higher first-half sales vs. 2019: Dodge, Kia, Alfa Romeo and Ram.

PS: Autos are by no means alone in their sales slump. Orange County homes sales were down 13% in 2020’s first six months vs. last year.
