MIDLAND, MI — The Northwood University International Auto Show has been postponed until spring 2021 because of the threat of coronavirus and COVID-19.
The spring auto show will take place in addition to the fall 2021 auto show, Northwood officials announced in a news release Wednesday, July 29. Northwood is in Midland County.
“The NUIAS team is excited to have the opportunity to innovate and create an exciting new event that will bring automotive industry leaders to the Northwood University campus and provide an opportunity for the public to participate in two events on campus in 2021,” Jack Gertley, Northwood senior and general chairperson of this year’s show, said in a statement.
The Northwood auto show joins a lengthy list of community events that have been canceled or postponed because of the public health risk of coronavirus and COVID-19 and restrictions on social gatherings and events in mid-Michigan and across the state. Other community events crossed off the calendar include Fourth of July fireworks displays, 2020 Frankenmuth Dog Bowl and Balloons Over Bavarian Inn, 2020 World Expo of Beer, Saginaw’s Jazz on Jefferson, Party on McCarty and more.
Northwood students manage every aspect of the fall auto show, from planning, fundraising and promotion to representing domestic and foreign brands throughout campus. This free event allows visitors to see hundreds of vehicles and dozens of industry-related displays across campus during Northwood’s Homecoming weekend. Now, Northwood students are managing the event postponement as well as the transition to a new spring 2021 event.
“The Northwood University International Auto Show is a treasured tradition at Northwood and a hands-on learning opportunity that no other university in America can offer to students, so we consulted with students and closely examined all our options before coming to this decision,” Northwood President Kent MacDonald said in a statement. “We have a solid plan in place for a complete academic program for our students this fall, with the ability to adapt to any foreseeable changes in the status of COVID-19, but we aren’t able to make that same assurance for the NUIAS, and we don’t want to compromise on something so important.”
His statement continued, “The Northwood University International Auto Show is very much a team effort. We greatly appreciate everyone’s support, and we look forward to introducing a new event in the spring of 2021.”
COVID-19 PREVENTION TIPS
In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.
Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.
Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
