This, I swear, is a true story.
My coffeemaker went on strike recently. I tried running water through the system to throw the accumulated coffee grounds overboard but it still refused to make me a cup or two of my morning caffeine that I used to warm my brain while reading three print newspapers, the Antelope Valley Press, the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal.
When I receive a phone call, an illuminated box with the name of the caller appears on my television screen.
Last week, I believed I was receiving a call from one of my two great-grandsons, who are willing to do my grocery shopping.
I didn’t recognize the voice but I explained I needed a new coffee maker.
Several days later, I received call from Dennis Anderson who announced that he had purchased a caffeine machine for me.
I was perplexed but I never question good tidings when they come in.
Dennis and his wife Julia arrived shortly thereafter and Dennis lugged in an oversized Cadillac-style coffee maker, with a large water reservoir on the side.
I explained how confused I was about the phone call and expressed my gratitude to for the two-day delivery of the purchase.
I spent an hour studying a mini-manual to try to understand how to use the device.
First, I was told to clean out the reservoir to get rid of any accumulated dust.
When I had finished performing the coffee hygiene, I tried to follow the instructions. I pushed the power button and there would be an array of lights but no cup of coffee. Eventually, I retried the old machine and it promptly produced a cup of Joe, a working system that I could kickstart every morning.
Two days later, my great-grandson Steve, recently turned 21, came over to my condo and I showed him the instructions and he pressed a few buttons and the machine responded with a hot cup of coffee.
Why are new generations of young people able to use tech mobile devices that baffle me? I had him write down a set of fool-proof instructions.
After lifting the top lid and replacing the coffee capsule, the machine performed perfectly.
I now had two operational machines and I can enjoy my morning ritual with a hot cup of caffeine and my papers.
For most of my adult life, I’ve encountered household tasks that refused to be solved. My only benefit is another column topic.
