MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A Monroe auto mechanic said even though many people aren’t using their cars as much during the pandemic, they shouldn’t let vehicle maintenance fall by the wayside.
Frank Nettles, the owner of Frank Nettles Automotive, said his doors have remained open during the pandemic as an essential business. He said customers have been coming in to keep their cars maintained while they’re quarantined.
Nettles suggests keeping the car running for ten to fifteen minutes every couple of days to recharge the battery. He said the less you use your car, the lower the air pressure gets.
When your car sits idle for too long, he said vermin like rats and mice begin to chew on the wires. Nettles said the cabin air filter in the vehicle needs to be regularly replaced as well. Also, keep an eye on the fluids in the car and get your oil changed.
“You’re not using your car, it’s a good time to let your mechanic have it. Now you’re not away from your job, you’re not doing without your car to go to the store because you’re not going anywhere anyway. You have people bringing you stuff. So absolutely a good time to get your car maintained, or serviced, or just checked over,” said Nettles.
Nettles also suggests getting your tires checked once a month, and to fill the gas tank up with non-ethanol fuel to prevent the vehicle from collecting water.
To keep his business safe, Nettles closes on Fridays to sanitize the building. He also tells his workers to sanitize cars before and after working on them.
“That’s the best thing you could ever do... distance. We’re touching cars, we’re touching steering wheels. We’re right in that car where everybody’s at. Where they smoke, drink, whatever they do we’re in the middle of that,” he said.
