100 Years Ago, for the second week of August 1920, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

ADVERTISEMENT: “Need to go to Estes Park and haven’t driven it in an auto in the mountains before now? George Hummel has eight years’ experience in mountain driving. Phone Gr. 1074.”

The YMCA Boys will be taking their swimming lessons in Seely’s Lake. They have always used Windsor Lake before, but the instructor said Seely’s is much better. The good thing about Windsor, however, is that it could be reached by train. Seely’s is out in the country and the boys will have to be taken there by automobile.

Four men have been arrested on grand larceny charges and are on bond at this time. The men went into the New Raymer Ford Garage last Thursday and grabbed a Michelin auto tire and ran from the business. They were later arrested in Grover. Each has a bail bond of $500.

In the Sunday School Baseball League, the Presbyterians forfeited to the Baptists. The next game in the regular schedule is the Congregationalists against the Methodists. After that game the final tournament of the league will begin.

There is a new Dream City in northern Weld County, near the Wyoming state line. It is Hereford, which was once a small village with old stock corrals and two old worn-down houses. Now the new Hereford has several newly-built houses as good as any in Greeley, and a hotel which rivals the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, although the building is smaller.

Streetcar strikers went into riot form last night in Denver, killing two men and injuring 34 others. They attacked the Denver Post because of the newspaper’s anti-union stories. They also destroyed tramway cars and beat the tramway employees. The offices were badly damaged. Tonight, Denver police ill confront the rioters with machine guns mounted on trucks, plus hundreds of volunteers armed with shotguns. Federal military units are also coming.

The Legioneers, a traveling professional baseball team out of Chicago, were in Greeley yesterday to play the Greeley Spuds. The Legioneers are a different kind of team with boy men and women playing. They travel the country all summer, playing different teams. In the two weekend games at Island Grove Park, the teams split. The Legioneers won the first, 3-2 and the Spuds won the second, 7-6.

A vacant house at 224 13 th Street is being remodeled, but that process stopped for a few days when a large amount of dynamite was found hidden inside. The police now have the dynamite, and are looking for the former owner of the house.
