FLINT, MI -- An auto auction on Flint’s east side says economic conditions have continued to deteriorate this summer, forcing it to terminate 40 more employees after permanently laying off 133 in June.

ADESA Lansing LCC notified the city and the state of the added job cuts at its ts Flint facility, located at 3711 Western Road, in a letter Monday, Aug. 3.

The company said the job losses are tied to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The ADESA auction facility in Flint remains operational and highly active,” KAR Global, which owns the ADESA brand, said in a statement to MLive-The Flint Journal. “We continue to operate our weekly sales and perform inspection and reconditioning services as permitted by local health restrictions and pursuant to (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) safety guidelines.

“We made reductions in several areas of our business units to reflect the ongoing transition to a more digital operating model and the current and anticipated business levels as a result of COVID-19. In response to the pandemic, we accelerated a number of technology and operational initiatives that resulted in the deployment of new products and services as well as efficiencies in both our corporate and field operations. We remain focused on serving the needs of our customers and are well positioned to navigate the recovery.”

The company has said previously that permanent layoffs in Flint include transportation drivers, security guards and detailers.

KAR announced in 2016 that it had purchased the former Flint Auto Auction, which was a family-owned business, and would operate it under the ADESA name. In all, KAR auctions sold nearly 3.8 million vehicles valued at approximately $40 billion in 2019 and generated approximately $2.8 billion in revenue.

Headquartered in Carmel, Indiana, KAR has more than 15,000 employees and does business in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Europe, according to the its website.

At the time the Flint Auto Auction was sold in 2016 for a reported $76 million, the site offered full-service reconditioning facilities, including body and mechanical shops. It offered factory, fleet and dealer sales every Wednesday.

While it operated as Flint Auto Auction, the business earned several awards, including the SmartAuction Mid-Stream Auction of the Year award for Ally Financial multiple times, according to Flint Journal files.
