Beaverton, Mich.-based Brown Machine Group acquired robotics capabilities from automation equipment supplier Axatronics LLC, a Loveland, Ohio-based company that won an innovation award for developing a robot to tie bows around candy boxes.

Terms of the deal, announced late June 2, were not disclosed.

BMG Sales Vice President Bob Gordert told Plastics News that BMG acquired Axatronics's intellectual property, product lines and brand in addition to robotic capabilities and technology.

"The integration of robotics into the existing Brown Machine Group installed base, in combination with new product development, is very attractive," Gordert said in an email. "The Axatronics addition aligns nicely with our growth strategy for end of line automation, innovation and strengthens our position as a fully integrated turn-key solution provider."

Founded in 1952, BMG makes thermoforming equipment and tooling as well as automated material handling equipment for paper and plastic products. The equipment and related services are sold under the Brown, Lyle, Nalle Automation Systems (NAS), and Freeman Co. brand names.

Gordert said all Axatronics employees will be retained and become part of NAS, which is based in Knoxville, Tenn. Dave Whelan, founder and former president of the acquired company, is now BMG's robotics director. He will work between Ohio and Tennessee while the remaining staff eventually relocates to the Knoxville area, Gordert said.

The combination of NAS and Axatronics will help BMG supply fully integrated turn-key solutions, according to BMG CEO Greg Wolf.

For example, as a strategic partner of Yaskawa America Inc., Axatronics developed a way to palletize up to 200 different case sizes containing glass products on a single robot.

"The addition of Axatronics to the BMG group enhances the solutions we provide to the industry," Wolf said in a news release.

Whelan gained national attention when Axatronics won an innovation award from Yaskawa Motoman in 2014 for creating the first robot capable of tying a ribbon bow around a boxed product.

Other Axatronics products include stackers, loaders, product handlers, case packers and robotic end-of-arm tools.

Whelan said Axatronics is a good fit for BMG.

"The addition of Axatronics robotic capabilities will broaden our existing product lines and enhance our substantial new product development efforts," Whelan said in the release.
