COLUMBUS, Ohio – A little more than a century ago, America’s fledgling automobile industry faced real obstacles.
One of the biggest was the crank-by-hand starting mechanism on the vehicles of the early 1900s. The crank frequently injured motorists, resulting in broken arms, hands, and wrists – and on some occasions, even death. Moreover, the physical demands of the crank limited the number of women who could start vehicles by themselves.
