New law requires all Virginians to get auto insurance - 29 News

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - For years, Virginia was one of two states that did not require drivers to have car insurance, but a new law going into effect this summer will change that.

Drivers in Virginia had the option of paying $500 a year to register an uninsured car. Starting July 1st, that’s going away.

State Farm Agent Eva Gee Scott says auto insurance policy has lots of different elements. One of those categories is liability protection.

“A lot of the time your vehicle will damage another vehicle or property. But there’s also injuries that occur and deaths that occur in auto accidents,” Scott said.

When those things happen in an accident, people affected need to be made whole. That’s where your insurance company comes in and " you pay the monthly fee for the protection that your insurance company will provide in the event you’re liable for an accident, and that’s the property or injury of others,” Scott said.

For first-timers getting auto insurance, there are discounts available if you call and talk to a trusted agent.

“They’re not just trying to get your business but they’re trying to help educate you and guide you properly for what you need for your personal price plan,” Scott said.

Once the new law takes effect, drivers will have 30 days to submit proof of insurance. If they don’t, their license could be suspended.
