JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Ultimate Auto Repair completed its sixth annual Christmas Car Giveaway Friday in Jackson, handing over the keys to the winner.
Danielle Hinton couldn’t believe her ears when she got a call from Ultimate Auto Repair, telling her she’d won a free car.
“It’s really surreal,” Hinton said. “I’ve told many people to ‘please slap me in the face, wake me up, is this really happening?'”
The owner of the repair shop, Karl Roekle, said they started the car giveaway to give back. He said people nominate whomever they feel deserves the car, and then a panel of judges picks the winner.
Roekle told 6 News that this year, they had around 150 nominations.

“We have two rules,” Roekle said. “You have to live in Jackson County, and the other rule is it’s a hand-up, not a handout. And somehow, the judges figure out what that is and what that means in real life. And we’re thankful to be able to give back to the community.”
Hinton said she hasn’t had a car since September, and she’s been borrowing her friend’s car to get her kids where they need to be. “Activities, school. Especially practices,” Hinton said. “Like, they have practice in the morning, afternoon, on the weekends, and then tournaments. All that jazz.”
Hinton said she lives within walking distance of her job, but now she’ll get there even quicker.
“I just want to drive it to work every single day,” Hinton said. “I’m excited to drive it to work. Because I just want to drive the car, wherever I can drive the car.”
And Roekle didn’t stop there–he also surprised Hinton with a $100 gas gift card. He said that with all Hinton does for the community, she deserves this.
“We’re hoping it brings her freedom and lets her enjoy her family, enjoy her life, and continue to help the community and the people around her,” Roekle said.
