A Grand Theft Auto V actor recently spoke out about an AI recreation of his voice in a recent project, calling out a Web3 company, WAME, online for using it without his consent.
Ned Luke, the voice behind Michael from Grand Theft Auto V, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out WAME who recreated his voice for an AI chatbot acting as his character from the game. The post garnered massive support from fans, who spoke out in solidarity for the actor and outrage at the use of digital likeness without any official communication with him. According to Luke, there is "absolutely nothing cool about ripping people off with some lame computer estimation of my voice."
Magic: The Gathering Under Fire for AI Use in Recent Promotional Art
Magic: The Gathering disappoints its fans when the game's official X account admits to using AI in its promotional artwork.Luke, who typically embraces fan projects like mods and other content featuring his character, often reposting them to his account, drew the line at an AI chatbot recreating Michael's voice from the game, for which he provided. He tagged both Rockstar Games, the developers of Grand Theft Auto and the official SAG-AFTRA account, which recently signed a deal to allow the use of "AI replicas" of human actors with signed consent from both parties. He also tagged Roger Clark, the voice actor for Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption II, who has seen similar AI recreations in recent months and been similarly opposed to them. Clark responded to his post, stating his support for the actor and claiming that the AI recreation is no match for Luke's real voice talent.
Luke's post also got the attention of the chatbot's original creator, a GTA fan who responded with a long apology explaining that his intentions were simply to allow fans to interact with the game's characters and that he had no financial incentives to do so. They then promised to remove the app and any use of Luke's voice, which has since disappeared.
