AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - A Northeast Ohio man claims faulty auto repair work almost caused him to crash his jeep.
Dash cam video shows a white jeep wrangler shaking on the highway. Ryan Weiss had to pull over.
“I thought it was going to shatter the windows of the car. It’s screeching, and it’s pulling, my steering is gone,” said Weiss
Weiss says he couldn’t see anything visibly wrong. He got back in the car to try and drive again.
“The same thing happens again, but worse,” said Weiss.
“I know I can’t drive the vehicle at this point. After it happening twice, there is definitely something wrong.”
Weiss claims Crash Champions Collison Repair Team in Akron improperly installed a part on his jeep.
“Your negligence could have killed me, I could have hit one of the other cars as I was trying to maneuver off the highway.” said Weiss.
Weiss’ jeep was involved in a hit-and-run in September 2023.
“They hit the front left side, they did a lot of damage to the suspension. The front wheel needed to be replaced.”
He took the car to Crash Champions on Turkeyfoot Lake Road. The business was one of the preferred shops on the insurance company’s list.
Crash Champions finished the repairs by the first week of October. Weiss says he rarely drives his jeep because he works from home. He drove it to New York for a funeral in February. He noticed something wasn’t right during that drive.
“In driving there, something doesn’t feel right, when I slow down it would be thumpy,” said Weiss.
He called Crash Champions asking them if they could take a look.
“They kind of pushed it off like hey it’s been six months since we did that work, if something was wrong you would have known already.”
Weiss claims they said they would get back to him, but never did. After the incident on the highway, he took the jeep to Fred Martin in Norton.
Cell phone video shows an employee explaining what part was improperly installed.
“It’s clear this part was recently just replaced. It was installed wrong by whoever did it. They show where the track bar was installed wrong and completely snapped off,” said Weiss.
Weiss says an insurance inspector also confirmed the shop’s new findings. Weiss reached out to the Crash Champions corporate office. He says the director operations gave him false hope.
“Very apologetic, ‘I 100% understand. I am going to do everything I can to get it resolved.’”
Weiss was told Crash Champions sub-contracted Green Automotive to do the suspension work on his jeep back in September.
“The owner was like, ‘We will rectify it, we’re in the wrong we are going to take care,’” said Weiss.
Weiss went back and forth with corporate who referred him to their legal team.
Although Fred Martin made repairs, Weiss is still afraid to drive the jeep. It sits in his driveway.
“It’s been emotional, it’s been mentally draining,” said Weiss.
Crash Champions has several locations. According to Better Business Bureau, customers rate their service as one out of five.
19 Investigates went to the corporate office. We also called the director of operations who says they’ve washed their hands with the situation and the jeep has been fixed.
19 Investigates went to Green Automotive who actually did the suspension work.
The company claims they got a call about the jeep a few weeks ago, but Crash Champions never followed with them.
Weiss says all he wanted was Crash Champions to take accountability.
“You admitted wrongdoing, there’s evidence to back it and you did nothing.”
Weiss is urging consumers to vet auto repair shops before handing their car over. He says it would have saved him some trouble.
